A Week Later

As of Friday, Matthew has another job that he will start on Monday!

After a rough weekend, the week started off really good with a lot of resumes being sent out. Matthew had an interview Thursday morning, and by the end of the day he had been offered a job. He had another interview Friday morning, but it wasn't enough money or what he wanted to do. So he accepted the previous job offer, and after a lot of phonecalls back and forth discussing money and schedules and all the technical things, it was official!

The only downside is that the job is through a temp agency for the first 90 days, which basically means less money during that time and a longer wait for benefits. But we are so thankful that it only took a week to find a job! It is actually closer to our house, so less money will be wasted on the drive to and from work. And I think in the longrun it will actually be a better job. The place is twice as large as the last job, which means there is more potential to move up. He will not be doing the exact same job as before, but it's still at a dealership. Matthew is so excited to start Monday morning! The Lord always provides!

Friday the 13th.

I am not a superstitious person, but perhaps I should be. Friday the 13th was just another day. Matthew went to work. I went to school. I went to lunch with my parents and ran a few errands with my mom. I bought the last piece for a wedding gift, and it was 13% off because it was Friday the 13th. It was a typical Friday. As I sat at home wondering what we would have for dinner, I was counting down the minutes until Matthew would be home. And then the phone rang. It was 6:14, and it was Matthew. He never calls on his way home. I wondered why he was calling, so I answered. His voice was hesitant and all he said was, "I lost my job." I thought he was joking and said several times, "Are you serious?" How could this be true? I just knew he was playing around. He wasn't.

I cried until I could cry no more. Matthew didn't want to come home, but he did. He apologized for letting me down, although he didn't let me down. I wasn't mad at him. I am just upset at the situation and worried to death. Just five months ago, we were a two income family. Then I left my full-time job to start school full-time. Now our one income is gone. We are a zero income family. How did this happen? How do we deal with this? The economy is down and jobs are hard to come by. We have been praying that God's will be done in our lives. We are fully relying on Him. We are down and broken, but we have hope that Matthew will find a job. We are not looking for the perfect job. We are not looking for a career. We are just looking for a job, an income, a stepping stone along the way. But if that perfect job or career is available and so presents itself, then so be it. We are thankful for the encouragement of those around us and for their willingness to help. We just ask that everyone will send us up in prayer as we go through this time!

Put a Spring in Your Step!

It's officially spring semester of school!

Classes started Monday, and clinicals started yesterday. I was really nervous but also excited to be at the hospital yesterday. But once I got there, met everyone I'd be working with, and started doing rounds, I knew this was the job for me! I think I fit in really well at the hospital, which is good because it is one of the places I would like to work someday. I had to be there at 6:45 a.m., and I am not a morning person haha. But I got there on time and the day went by quickly. It wasn't a crazy busy day, but I know those days do exist. There wasn't a lot of downtime, but there were moments to sit down and ask questions. Everyone worked together as a team to get the job done. I heard a lot of my classmates saying they heard some disagreements between co-workers at other hospitals, and a few talked about some more serious procedures that they saw. Although they were all excited about getting to do the more advanced things, I am happy that I started off with a normal day of doing rounds and giving treatments! I was beyond comfortable with my two preceptors and was able to ask questions about everything. But the best part of the job was definitely seeing the patients! They were all so sweet and nice to me! It felt good to know you were helping them out!

I am so excited about this semester! Classes are going great so far. But clinicals are definitely going to be the best part. Now I can understand more of what we learned because I can see it and apply it to a real person. It's hard to learn breath sounds and know why you do certain treatments when you cannot hear a real person and see the difference treatments make. I learned so much yesterday and can't wait to go back next week!

As Christmas Break Comes to a Close...

I am so ready for school to get started! It hasn't even been the full three weeks yet, but I am dying here! Although I have gotten used to some time at  home, I have certainly not adjusted to being home for days on end. This only affirms that I will not be a full-time stay at home mother one day. Before Christmas, I was busy with last minute shopping and baking and wrapping. The week after Christmas kept me busy with putting away all the gifts and decorations. And this week has been... I don't even know. I have watched a lot of TBS. And I have been cooking a lot.

My grandma is back in the hospital. She had been feeling pretty bad and it turns out she has pneumonia again, a low thyroid, and a bladder infection. I'm hoping to go up there and spend some time with her today.

The diet is going very good so far! Well, no exercise has been done yet. But according to the scales, I've lost 4 lbs. so far. I'd say that's a good start! Eating right really does make a big difference in how you feel. I think Matthew is beyond motivated and excited this time, and his excitement is keeping me motivated! Every meal I've made has been "the best thing I've ever had!" according to Matthew haha. Hopefully we can keep on this path though. I think the key is making food that is healthy but that also tastes good. A lot of people have a misconception that healthy automatically means it tastes bad. Definitely not true! Matthew even made the comment that canned and frozen stuff doesn't taste as good as fresh. I mean how many awesome comments can I get out of this guy this week?!

Hopefully next week once school starts back and I have a set schedule, I can fit in the exercise and cooking healthy too. I think it will be easier once I have a schedule. I feel so lost this week!

Starting Off 2012 With a Bang!

Okay, maybe it was more like I ended 2011 with a bang... by watching The Big Bang Theory on TBS for hours! haha I did not make it until midnight. I think I finally went to sleep at 11:30. No, I couldn't make it thirty more minutes haha! Matthew was asleep long before me. We didn't have any parties to go to (never have). My parents have more of a social life than we do. But we don't really care. We got take out Mexican and Chinese. Can you guess who ate what?

We started a diet on Monday! Although, we're not following a specific diet plan. We're just cutting back on calories, watching our portion sizes, and exercising (I would say more but we typically have no activity at all). The refrigerator and pantry are stocked with healthy items! Multiple grocery stores were visited to get everything we needed, and I spent less than $100 which should last us at least two weeks if not longer. And since we're not following a specific diet plan (partly because they don't work, and mostly because they cost money), I found a really useful tool on WebMD that lets you track your food, fitness, and weight. And the best part is, it's FREE!

I wanted to post pre-diet photos and weight, but it's just too depressing haha. Maybe after I lose some weight I'll be able to admit what I weighed at the beginning! My goal is to lose 70 pounds. I have gotten close to that weight goal before (off by about 5-10 pounds), so I know I can do it again this time. Matthew's goal is to lose almost 75 pounds. We're starting our exercise today. If you've got any workout ideas to do at home, I would really appreciate the advice! We can't really afford a gym membership, and the closest gym is about 15 minutes away which is frustrating at night when you're already tired and living on 2 different schedules. So we're going to try all the resources we have at home: walking, biking (outside and the stationary one inside), and pilates (for me). I hope that by mid-February (when we have a wedding to go to) that we'll have already lost about 1/4 of our goal!
